Scholarship guide for Indian students

Eligibility across most central schemes: Indian citizen resident in India, minimum 60% in qualifying exams, family income ₹2.5–8 lakh, and a valid offer from a recognised foreign university. Some exclude anyone who has already studied abroad for more than six months.

National Overseas Scholarship (Ministry of Social Justice) — 125 slots a year for SC/DNT/LAL/TA candidates: full tuition, living costs (USD 15,400/yr USA, GBP 9,900 UK), travel, visa and insurance. Applications open twice yearly; the second round runs September–October at nosmsje.gov.in.

Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships cover tuition, stipend, airfare and insurance for US study in public health, environmental science and education.

Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship funds social sciences research at St Antony’s College, Oxford at GBP 29,944 a year.

Dr. Ambedkar Scheme of Interest Subsidy pays the interest on education loans for OBC/EBC students under ₹8 lakh income.

Europe: Sciences Po Émile-Boutmy (€3,000–€13,000), Oxford Felix (tuition + £15,000–£16,000/yr + flights), Sheffield (£7,000/yr).

Engineering: DAAD Germany covers tuition, stipend and travel; ISAE SUPAERO/MBDA in France awards eight fellowships with tuition plus €5,000/yr; Erasmus+ pays about €1,000 a month for ten months.

Arts and humanities: Inlaks Fine Arts Award (₹3 lakh/yr for under-30 visual artists), Neemrana Music Foundation with the French Embassy (two awards a year, 11 months), and French MFA residencies at La Fémis and ENS Louis Lumière.

Outside Europe: Cornell Tata Scholarship (full tuition, ~20 Indian undergraduates a year) and Stanford Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship (up to $150,000 for five Indian MBAs a year, with a return-to-India commitment).

Women and first-generation students: Kotak Kanya (engineering, medicine, architecture), L’Oréal India Young Women in Science (₹62,500 UG / ₹1,00,000 PG), Oxford Savitribai Phule (full fees plus living for SC/ST/OBC first-generation students), Wipro Santoor.

Students with disabilities: post-matric support of ₹900–₹1,600 a month plus up to ₹1.5 lakh tuition, Top Class awards of ₹3,000 a month plus up to ₹2 lakh, and 20 National Overseas Scholarship slots (six reserved for women) under an ₹8 lakh income ceiling.

Most profile-based awards stack with university merit scholarships — apply to both, not one.

Research the official portal for each scheme, then check eligibility line by line before writing anything.

Prepare transcripts, income certificate, admission letter, SOP, letters of recommendation and ID proof as one master set.

Apply through the National Scholarship Portal or the scheme’s own portal, then track the status — several schemes reject silently on missing documents.

Target scores: IELTS 6.5–7.0, TOEFL 90–100, GRE 315+, GPA 3.0 minimum. Apply to several schemes at once and never miss a deadline.
